EBV Viral Load Standardization Workshop

Since many years standardization of EBV viral load measurement has been suggested to make results between different labs comparable. Until now, many aspects of EBV detection are still under debate such as sample matrix, normalization or the definition of cut-off values. The aim of this meeting is to find a consensus on a European level for EBV viral load measurement.

Demonstration of the game
The UK Clinical Virology Network is proud to present KillerFlu.org, a free online game that demonstrates the complex factors involved in the creation of a pandemic flu outbreak and encourages people of all ages to learn more about the subject. It is especially aimed at the over 14 years of age market.

In the game, the player will be tasked to create a pandemic flu outbreak by indirectly controlling factors, such as mutation, reassortment, delivery of viruses to specific bird and human populations and the public health response, that might produce such an outcome. The factors are not random, but they are subject to simultaneous and intervening situations and extremely difficult to recreate without a strong measure of luck!

A game format was chosen to illustrate the conditions through which a pandemic flu outbreak might occur because the medium lent itself so well to representing complex systems in an entertaining and informative way. It’s fair to say that the likelihood of a player producing a truly global pandemic flu is extremely unlikely, because the conditions required to produce it are nearly impossible to orchestrate, but everyone can have fun trying it for themselves!

Traffic games have created an interesting and unique way of presenting scientific knowledge to a broad cross-section of people. Gaming is fast becoming recognised as a means of delivering critical, educational information in a highly engaging manner.

KillerFlu.org is being premiered at the Third European Congress of Virology. The game is sponsored by Luminex corporation.
